Scottish Provident and Bright Grey have urged advisers to raise clients' awareness of the cost of surviving cancer.
The call follows a report from Macmillan Cancer Support which reveals that survivors often go on to struggle with other serious illnesses.
The charity says that thanks to modern medical techniques five year survival rates are higher than they have ever been - but that many patients do not appreciate the lasting impact of cancer and its treatment.
However, people may have to take extended time off work to make the treatment most effective, which can have implications on family finances, especially if the main income stream stops.
Roger Edwards, proposition director for Bright Grey and Scottish Provident said: "While doctors can treat the physical effects of illness they cannot provide the financial treatment available from an adviser.
"It is a good opportunity for advisers to contact new and existing clients to talk to them about how they can set up a critical illness plan to provide much needed money in the event of a serious illness like cancer."
