Aviva has extended cover on its critical illness (CI) policies with benefits for additional conditions, ABI+ definitions and child cover.
Five CI conditions now fall under ABI+ definitions: cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, major organ transplant and motor neurone disease.
New critical illness customers will be covered for three new conditions; significant visual impairment, Crohn's disease treated with intestinal resection and removal of an eyeball.
There are now five additional benefits offered. Each condition pay-out will be separate to the main policy.
Robert Morrison, chief underwriter at Aviva, said: "We understand that many people find critical illness policies confusing, so we have reviewed our cover with this in mind.
"We want to only add conditions which increase breadth of cover and provide greater clarity for customers. We know exactly which conditions account for the largest number of claims, so we've taken great care to make changes where customers will benefit most."
Children's benefit included in new CI policies will now offer payments of up to £25,000 for each policy per child.
And some conditions previously included in Aviva's total permanent disability (TPD) definition have been separated out in an aim to clarify conditions covered.
Aviva has provided a guide for advisers and customers to support understanding of the changes.
Last year, Aviva paid 94.1% of CI claims.
