Employers are offering no health or wellbeing benefits for 40% of their employees, a survey by Bupa has found.
The survey of 4000 employed UK adults and 1000 UK employers of higher managerial level found that 64% of UK employers agreed a healthy workforce is a more productive one.
However 28% of employees said that for well-being their company was all talk and no action.
Of UK employers 57% agreed that good health makes good business sense, while 58% said that an unhealthy workforce is a risk to business performance.
Working was found to be taking a toll on some employees with 37% saying their job a negative impact on their physical health, while 36% said it was having a negative impact on their mental health.
A separate report published with the Union for International Cancer Control, Cancer, It's Everyone's Business found that 46% of employers agreed preventing cancer among employees is a priority while 6% of employees said their employer provided health awareness and education campaigns.
Patrick Watt, corporate director for Bupa UK, said: "Employers have a clear role to play in supporting the health and wellbeing of their workforce.
"There is huge potential for employers to engage employees and support them to adopt healthier lifestyles through workplace health and wellbeing initiatives.
"Not only will this benefit the individual, but smart employers know that healthier employers come to work, perform at their peak and go the extra mile."
