Aviva is set to close its Manchester bodily injury claims team in December in a move which would cost 200 jobs, it has been reported.
According to the Manchester Evening News (MEN) the work currently handled in the branch would instead be sent to Bangalore, India.
The plan is reportedly part of its wide-scale restructuring announced in April, which is expected to see 2,000 roles slashed across the group.
An Aviva spokesman confirmed to Insurance Age: "In April we announced plans for a reduction of approximately 2,000 roles across the global group. This process will be on-going throughout the rest of 2013.
"Today claims teams have been briefed on changes affecting them.
"We do not take these decisions lightly and we appreciate this will be a tough time for those people affected by today's announcement."
Bitter
Meanwhile, a Unite union spokesman told the MEN: "It is going to be a bitter blow for staff who are understandably very angry after years of hard work and loyal service.
"We have always argued that companies that make profits in the UK should invest in the UK."
Last week, it was also reported that the insurer is looking to cut 650 roles - including 180 based in Norwich - and 300 contractor posts across the UK.
