Exeter Family Friendly has published statistics for income protection claims in 2012.
The mutual reported that 95% of claims were paid with the most common category of claim making up 41% being injuries and accidents, including fractures.
The 5% of declined claims are made up of; 26% still able to work in their own occupation; 27% non-disclosure; 21% personal exclusion; 13% no loss of income; 8% returned to work within the waiting period; 3% breach of contract; and 2% had other insurance.
Mental health and behavioral disorders accounted for 6% of claims while 11% claimed for back and spinal problems.
The release comes at a time when the industry continues to debate the relevance of claims statistics and potential for comparison.
Andy Chapman, chief executive of the mutual, said: "I've said it before, but it's worth repeating; I wouldn't buy a car without knowing how it performed, so why should I buy insurance this way?
"All the talk about any comparison not being a level playing field is completely missing the point; this is about building confidence in our industry."
Friends Life remains the only major provider left to publish income protection claims statistics.
It said yesterday that it had no current plans to publish due to concerns about inconsistent and differing criteria.
