Medicash has published its health insurance claims statistics for 2012.

The Liverpool-based cash plan provider paid out 99.1%, an increase on 98.3% for 2011.

According to Medicash, the declined claims were due to individuals having previously reached maximum entitlement for a specific benefit or trying to claim for a treatment not covered.

The largest proportion of claims were for optical, dental, inpatient and complementary therapies - mainly physiotherapy.

Sue Weir, chief executive of Medicash, said: "We have also seen a drop in customer complaints to a record low, attributable to improvements in customer service, product literature and staff training."
