Aviva is piloting paperless critical illness(CI) claims processing.
The insurer said it had been data gathering on CI policies since May to determine whether some could be paid after receiving medical evidence through alternative means to traditional paper formats.
According to Aviva, the aim will be to "dramatically" reduce the time taken to pay certain claims; some claims have been paid within 24 hours of notification.
Andy Doran, life claims manager for Aviva, said: "If there is a way to make the claims journey quicker and easier for our customers then this is exactly what we will strive to do.
"While not all claims are suitable for a paperless route, we want to determine how many people we can help in this way. For those individuals, this could be a hugely positive step forward."
In May last year the ABI introduced guidelines to help speed up life claims across the industry.
