Exeter Family Friendly paid 94% of income protection (IP) claims for 2014 with 36% of claims coming from injuries and accidents.

The second largest cause of claims was back and spinal problems, accounting for 14% of claims while other musculoskeletal problems accounted for 13% of claims.

Other causes of IP claims included digestive disorders (such as hernias) which made up 8% of claims, infections (5%) cancer (4%) and mental and behavioural disorders (3%).

The biggest reason for claims being rejected was people being able still to work in their own occupation which accounted for 34% of rejected claims.

The second most common reason for rejected claims (29%) was there being no loss of income to the policyholder.

Claims were also rejected for returning to work within the waiting period (15% of rejected claims), 14% of rejections were for personal exclusions and 8% for non-disclosure and breach of contract.

In 2014 Exeter Family Friendly launched a level premium option on its Income One IP plan.

Simon Philp director of distribution and marketing at Exeter Family Friendly, said: "Our statistics again show that despite what some may think, often ill health is simply as a result of bad luck - 36% of claims were made as a result of injury or accident."

He added: "We need consumers not only to believe in our industry, but to appreciate what great all round cover income protection can be."
