Probate delays jump 65% for year-long cases

Cases taking over six months rose 112%

The number of probate cases taking over one year to be granted has increased by 65% over the last three years, according to Quilter.

Analysis of Freedom of Information (FoI) data obtained from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) by Quilter found that the number of probate cases taking under two years to be granted has also increased by 65%, despite the data only running for nine months of 2023. Meanwhile, cases taking over six months surged 112% and those taking over nine months jumped 94%. According to the government, someone should usually get the grant of probate within 16 weeks of submitting an application, Quilter noted.
