The Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) has published a list of 19 insurers whose full or partial internal models have been approved for use under Solvency II from 1 January 2016.
The insurers with protection businesses were approved as follows: Aviva, Legal & General, Pacific Life Re, RSA Insurance, Scottish Widows and Unum.
Lloyds of London, Just Retirement and Prudential were other notable names included on the list.
Andrew Bailey, deputy governor, Prudential Regulation, Bank of England and CEO of the PRA said: "[This] marks a major milestone in the implementation of Solvency II in the UK."
From 2016, insurers in the United Kingdom will operate under the regulatory regime Solvency II.
This regulation is concerned with the amount of capital that EU insurance companies must hold to reduce the risk of insolvency.
Steve Harry, chief financial officer at Unum said: "This is a significant achievement for us, and confirms the regulator's faith in Unum's robust risk management practices and readiness for the new regime.
"Our teams will continue to capitalize on this to provide our customers and partners with high quality, innovative products and services".
