Aviva is set to release a healthcare plan which provides low cost cover for cancer treatment for individuals from January 2016.
The policy will provide a cash sum on diagnosis of cancer and £100,000 towards drugs not funded by the NHS. Premiums will start from around £8 a month.
Dr Doug Wright, medical director for Aviva Health said: "73% of adults in the UK have been affected directly or indirectly by cancer. "
Policyholders will also have access to a nurse advisor for further support.
The policy will be part of Aviva's ‘Essentials Range' - which broadens health insurance to covering targeted conditions.
Aviva said that the cancer cover policy was there to complement and top-up NHS cancer care.
The policy will be offered to existing customers who currently have products with Aviva such as home or motor insurance.
In 2007, health insurer WPA launched an NHS top-up cash plan which allowed patients to fund treatment involving specialist cancer drugs not available under the NHS. Bupa and AXA PPP Healthcare also offer cancer care cash plans.
