Promedica24, Europe's largest live in care provider, has found the idea of residential care is becoming less and less appealing with over two thirds (67%) considering a live in carer just so they don't have to go into a home.
Only 12% of people would consider residential care if they had to according to Promedica24 research.
Two thirds (66%) of people would choose live in care over a residential home with 60% of people saying that recent news and television documentaries about the state of residential care homes has put them off.
John Taylor, Operational Care Manager at Promedica24 said: ‘‘With the opportunity for people to manage their own personal budgets and an increase in care choices, older people feel more empowered to look at what ‘type of care' best suits their needs.
"Since launch we have seen a dramatic increase in enquiries for Live In care which suggests that more and more people are seeking live in care over a residential care home".
Of those who would rather have live in care at their home, the top five reasons are as follows:
• To avoid going into a home (67%)
• To be able to continue with their current lifestyle (60%)
• To have familiar people around them (54%)
• To feel safer (50%)
• To be near my relatives (38%)
