The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has appointed former chief executive of the Competition Commission (CC) David Saunders as a senior adviser on competition.

Saunders will support the FCA competition department and the forthcoming Payment Services Regulator as well as contribute to addressing competition issues as part of the regulator's thematic supervision work.

Prior to his role at the CC, Saunders worked as a civil servant within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and its predecessors for 35 years.

The FCA also appointed business manager Gunner Burkhart as senior adviser on wholesale and markets issues in investment banking.

Burkhart has 30 years' experience in investment banking and asset management, including at Nomura International, PWC, Lehman Brothers, Deutsche Asset Management and Goldman Sachs.

FCA chief executive Martin Wheatley said: "Both David and Gunner come with impressive experience in their respective areas, which will be a valuable resource for the teams as they look at competition and wholesale issues. I'm delighted to have them on-board."

The FCA took over as the financial services regulator from the Financial Services Authority on 1 April last year, assuming a new objective to 'promote competition'.

But one month into the FCA's takeover firms said they were sceptical the regulator would live up to its competition pledge.
