Biba executive director criticises "reams and reams" of information that "overwhelms" customers.
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has called for an end to "information overload" for insurance customers.
As part of the trade body's submission for the Chancellor's Autumn Statement, Biba urged the government to "create a more competitive regulatory environment".
Biba executive director, Graeme Trudgill, said: "One of the regulatory issues that we are looking at is information overload for customers.
"When you collect your medication from a pharmacist, you are given a small, on-sided leaflet giving advice on something which could potentially kill you."
He continued: "However, when it comes to insurance, we as an industry are forced to give reams and reams of information which often overwhelms customers, we want to work with consumer bodies and the regulator to come up with the right balance so that customers have more simple and digestible terms when arranging their insurance."
Urgency
Biba also called for the government to help brokers recruit and train staff with a nationwide-apprenticeship programme and tackle the issue of passported insurers "as a matter of urgency".
The trade body's chief executive Steve White added: "We are also proposing that in the long term a Consumer Insurance Working Party is set up in order to look at access to insurance, as well as ensuring that consumers receive the best possible advice and that they are not over-burdened with information."
