The Government leak that the Coalition had changed its mind on the Dilnot Commission's funding reform has been called questionable and a possible disaster.
A "senior civil servant" has leaked to the national press that the amount of money that people will have to pay towards the cost of their care in old age could still be capped at £35,000 after an apparent U-turn by the coalition government.
The Dilnot Commission on funding of care and support recommended the £35,000 limit to care, but not hotel costs, in July last year, but last month Andrew Lansley indicated the proposal would be scrapped due to cost.
The plan is expected to be announced formally in the autumn as part of a coalition relaunch and to be included in a care and support bill.
Jim Boyd, Director of Corporate Affairs at Partnership, said: "This is all very questionable, there is nothing of substance in this leak.
"It is all still subject to funding options in any case.
"If I were being cynical, I would say this is all about the feel good factor for the Government. The date given for anything happening anyway is 2017, that is two years after the next general election.
"This announcement runs the real risk of misinforming the public and there is a risk people will defer taking financial advice, this could be disastrous when what is being suggested might not come at all."
