UnumProvident has signed a five-year contract to conduct research with Cardiff University to find out why people respond differently to the same disease. The aim of the study is to research why particular conditions render some people unable to work while others continue. The insurer will invest £1.6 million over the five-year contract in the new UnumProvident Centre for Psychosocial and Disability Research in Cardiff's School of Psychology. It will be the first centre in the UK to develop specific lines of research in psychosocial factors related to disability. Dr Peter Dewis, customer care director at UnumProvident, said: "I am confident that we will be able to increase our effectiveness in helping people return to work after illness."
