Insurance service provider Medicals Direct has applied to register as an NHS service provider under the Health and Social Care Act.
The company, which currently supplies medical evidence gathering and underwriting services for the insurance industry, released the news as it opened a new medical facility in the City of London.
Mike Benton, CEO of Medicals Direct, commented. "Having applied to register as a service provider if new proposals contained within the Health and Social Care Act are passed, we expect to be well placed to benefit from increased demand due to our UK-wide distribution of services, ranging from full medicals to a range of rehabilitative services."
Under the bill, as it stands the GP Consortia, which will administer patient funding within the NHS, can elect to use any registered provider for provision of NHS services. With the bill in its current form this could be a decision based solely on price.
However the Government is currently drawing up key changes to the Bill which will see its re-organisation of the NHS watered down.
Medicals Direct's newly opened City of London clinic, is a response to demand to demand for an easily-accessible clinic where treatments from regulatory medicals to flu vaccinations can be obtained speedily and cost-effectively.
The premises will provide a full range of personal and corporate health services, including doctor and nurse screenings, regulatory medicals, physiotherapy and health surveillance testing.
Benton said. "The clinic is already busy with new and existing clients who find our new location very handy. Lime Street nicely complements our existing visiting doctor and nurse network services."
