Aviva is making the employee assistance programme (EAP) freely available on all its group income protection (GIP) schemes.
Previously the EAP was a paid for telephone only add-on which has been expanded to include face-to-face counselling sessions and a debt advice line.
The provider said this was prompted by its recent research which found a third of employees are concerned about their finances.
Support has also been introduced for employers with a new management service that includes an online stress support section explaining the legal issues and how to help prevent, manage and recognise stress in the workplace.
Advice on dispute resolution and trauma assistance is available too.
Steve Bridger, head of group risk at Aviva, explained that people can be affected by all manner of problems and that it was important for employers to provide support for them.
"These issues are often extremely hard for employers to tackle as many people are still reluctant to talk about their problems in the workplace.
"This is why it's important that line managers can recognise the signs when something is wrong and know what support to offer the individual and when.
"Early identification and treatment of stress-related conditions through group income protection and employee assistance programmes has extremely positive results which means that recovery times and absence lengths can be significantly controlled," he added.
