Insurance gap narrows following uptick in insured admissions

Hitting narrowest point since the pandemic

According to Broadstone's analysis of data from the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) this month on private healthcare admissions, the insurance gap is seen to be narrowing due to an increase in demand from employers supporting the health of their staff.

Insured admissions were at 105% of the levels recorded in the first quarter of 2019, after a 10-percentage point increase in the preceding six months from 95% as at the end of Q3 2022. Meanwhile, self-pay admissions were at 142% of the pre-Covid level, having dropped back from a peak of 144% in Q1 2022, which Broadstone noted is driving the insurance gap to its narrowest point since the pandemic.
