UK managers still reluctant to discuss serious illness with staff

One-fifth (20%) of UK managers with a team member who has, or has had, cancer do not know how to discuss that or any other serious illness with employees, according to research by AXA PPP healthcare.

The firm's survey of 500 UK managers with staff who have or have had cancer also found around a fifth (21%) of those surveyed had never spoken to these people about their illness while the same proportion admitted they did not feel comfortable speaking about any illness with employees. Of those who have actually discussed an employee's cancer with them, a fifth - again - said they were less comfortable discussing cancer than they are other chronic illnesses such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
